Whether you just enjoyed some corn on the cob or polished off a half rack of ribs, you likely have some food debris left behind in your mouth. Toothpicks might seem like helpful tools for this task, but are they the best option? The truth is that they may cause more harm than good. Read on to learn more about the danger of toothpicks and some safer ways that you can dislodge food from between your teeth.

What Are the Dangers of Toothpicks?

Using a toothpick may seem harmless, but there are actually some risks that you should be aware of. Here are some of the most prominent ones.

  • Toothpicks Break: Whether they are poorly made or you use too much pressure, a toothpick can easily snap or splints – sometimes becoming lodged in the gums. This can mean inflammation and infection if the issue isn’t dealt with right away.
  • Toothpicks Can Cause Infection: Toothpicks are sharp, so they can easily puncture the gums. Any open wound in the mouth is vulnerable to infection-causing bacteria.
  • Toothpicks Damage Restorations: If you have a veneer, filling, or crown, it could be in trouble if you are frequently using toothpicks. If there is a small issue or gap in existing restorations, it can be loosened or fracted by the toothpick.
  • Toothpicks Cause Gaps: If you are using toothpicks frequently, this can create additional space between your teeth for food debris and plaque to collect.

How Else Can You Remove Food From Between Your Teeth?

Instead of reaching for a toothpick after a meal, you may want to consider using one of the following methods.

  • Rinse with Mouthwash: By swishing water around your mouth, you might be able to wash away some of the food that’s been left behind.
  • Use Dental Floss: Floss is an effective way to remove roof debris, plaque, and bacteria from between the teeth.
  • Waterpik: This method uses a high-pressure water stream to dislodge good and other particles from between the teeth. This method is especially useful for patients who are undergoing orthodontic treatment or those with limited mobility.

You don’t need to rely on toothpicks to keep your teeth clean. They might be causing more harm than good! By using the alternative methods listed above, your smile will thank you!
